Challenge area: Novel technology
Indonesia is one of the largest producers of red seaweeds globally, contributing significantly to the incomes of many coastal communities across Indonesia. However, seaweed farming poses several challenges. Seaweeds farmers are using long lines with a limited surface area, and all operations are done manually; it is intensive work in a difficult environment. The revenue is insufficient and many farmers are stopping and migrating to big cities or touristic area, creating a shortage of some seaweeds on the market.
Stage of development: Prototype
AlgaeVeg is an innovative 2D system for the cultivation of red seaweeds replacing the traditional 1D long line system. The system allows a production yield 8 times higher than the traditional system , meaning a seaweed farmer can get a much higher revenue on the same sea surface. AlgaeVeg also have an innovative mooring system allowing offshore farming (more than 1 Km) , enabling greater diversity of seaweeds to be grown, and ensuring farms are less vulnerable to sea temperature increases.
Through SIP, AlgaeVeg is planning to develop two demonstration sites in Indonesia to model their technology against traditional approaches alongside education and training initiatives.
